The S.I.G.N.A.L. Protocol™
S – Signal Auditing
Before you can change the marriage, you must audit the "broadcast." We often leak resentment and fear through micro-expressions.
· The Goal: Moving from reactive behavior to responsive intentional broadcasting.
· The Skill: Mastering self-awareness and a non-threatening presence to bypass your spouse’s defensive radar.
I – Intentional Incongruity
A difficult spouse expects you to react in predictable ways (anger, pleading, or withdrawal). We use unfamiliarity to break the conflict cycle.
· The Goal: To create a "cognitive curiosity" that forces a withdrawing spouse to re-evaluate their perception of you.
· The Skill: Delivering responses that don't match the expected or familiar conflict-script.
G – Grounded Presence
Chaos in a marriage requires an anchor. If you are as emotionally volatile as the crisis, the marriage has no floor.
· The Goal: To become the "non-anxious presence" that signals safety to your spouse’s nervous system.
· The Skill: Physical and emotional anchoring techniques grounded in neurobiology.
N – Neutralizing the Alarm
In high-conflict marriages, difficult spouses often sound an “alarm”—that is, they say or do things designed to trigger each other and start a fight.
· The Goal: To avoid or silence the alarm that leads to blow-ups through self-control and managing triggers.
· The Skill: De-escalation strategies like recall (recalling the last time you took the bait, how awful you felt afterward, and avoiding it this time!).
A – Active Attunement
To lead, you must understand the subtext. A spouse’s anger is often a signal for embarrassment; their silence is often a signal for worry or fear.
· The Goal: Developing partner insight to read what your spouse is actually broadcasting.
· The Skill: Signal-naming to identify and avoid your spouse’s specific triggers.
L – Low-Frequency Gestures
Connection cannot be forced. For a spouse who is pulling away, big gestures are threatening.
· The Goal: Re-establishing trust through barely-there gestures of appreciation and affection.
· The Skill: Consistency over intensity to rebuild the emotional foundation.
